Abstract

Quantifying patient comments about their healthcare experiences is difficult. The purpose of this article is to report the results related to application of Halldorsdottir's Five Basic Modes of Being with Another to patient comments. Results indicated an increase in caring comments and a decrease in uncaring comments over a 2-year period with an interrater reliability of 83% to 91%. Using Halldorsdottir's model can assist in evaluation and classification of patient perceptions of their care on a continuum from caring to uncaring, allowing organizations to evaluate and act upon patient comments concerning their care.
