Abstract

The paper studies major frameworks of regionalism in «larger East Asia», including its recent developments and trends. It reveals an essential progress of regionalism in the part of the world in the 21st century as well as difficulties on its way. ASEAN, «ASEAN+1», «ASEAN+3», «ASEAN+6» and APEC are the major regional frameworks. Some potentially influential regional projects are in process of ratification, negotiation or discussion. The regional integration has occurred mostly in economic sphere in the form of free trade agreements (FTAs) and reaching their consistency. The only exceptions are ASEAN Community in three spheres, and mutual security mechanisms in financial sphere within «ASEAN+3» framework. Different regional projects are competitive, for example, «ASEAN+3» and «ASEAN+6» frameworks, Transpacific Partnership and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership agreements, and East Asian Community and «free and open Indo-Pacific region» concepts. Besides bolstering trade and investments, regionalism in «larger East Asia» is an instrument of great powers’ rivalry for regional influence, and middle and small powers’ hedging against potential risks.
