Abstract

Advances in the research and development of segmented conjugated macromolecules continue to open opportunities in the design of materials for a multitude of applications. Careful choice of polymerization technique enables the synthesis of controlled structures using precursors with promising mechanical and electrochemical properties. Further modification of the macromolecular structures allows for additional functionalities such as flexible side chains for process ability. Electrochemical properties of polymers are tuned using and combining segments with appropriate properties, for example, combining electron donor and acceptor properties to control the electronic band gap in materials for photovoltaics. This contribution will describe representative examples of conjugated systems and respective applications, differentiate between the oligomer and the polymer approach, and describe select developments in segmented conjugated polymer systems for use in a variety of electro-optical applications.
