Abstract

INTRODUCTION THIS investigation was undertaken to determine to what extent dried cow manure may be substituted in a standard layer and breeder ration. Such information would be of value in areas, like Hawaii, where ingredients must be shipped long distances and are occasionally subject to prolonged interruption in shipment. References to cow manure as a source of vitamins for poultry have been extensively reported in the literature. Bechdel et al. (1928), Wegner and coworkers (1940, 1941), Hunt et al. (1941, 1943), and McElroy and Goss (1940a, 1940b, 1941) reported that vitamins of the B-complex were synthesized in the cow’s rumen. Hammond (1942 Hammond (1944), Hunt and co-workers (1943), Rubin et al. (1946), and Rubin and Bird (1946a, 1946b) have reported on the presence of a chick growth-promoting factor(s) in cow manure as well as on its beneficial feeding value for laying birds.
