Abstract

In this paper, the development and preliminary results of a new low-cost electronic nose (e-nose) instrument based on an array of six electrochemical sensors is presented. The aim of such instrument is to detect volatile compounds that might be hazardous for humans such as methane, combustible gas, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and smoke, among others. In particular, this work focuses on sensor characterization; the sensors’ sensitivity, behavior face to temperature, and step response were experimentally analyzed. Preliminary results with the e-nose prototype show the behavior of the set of sensors. Further signal classification possibilities are presented and discussed.
