Abstract

The mental status exam (MSE) is an evaluation of a person's current mental state. It is an integral part of any mental health assessment, and can incorporate information from clinical interviews, testing, and self-report information. MSEs usually gather information on an individual's appearance, activity level, speech/language, attitude, affect/mood, stream of consciousness, sensorium/cognition, insight, and judgment.
