Abstract

In this study, we examine how lexical predictability may differ between speech to native and non-native listeners. Some previous studies have suggested that speech to non-native listeners may share some properties with infant-directed speech, including slower speaking rates, higher intensity and greater fundamental frequency range. However, it is unclear whether other factors, such as lexical predictability are modulated in speech to non-native listeners. In this study, we specifically ask whether lexical sophistication and lexical diversity differ in speech from a native speaker to either another native interlocutor or to a non-native interlocutor.
