Structure and reproduction of Sporolithon episoredion (Adey, Townsend et Boykins) comb. nov. (Corallinales, Rhodophyta) from the Spermonde Archipelago, Indonesia

A critical study of the crustose marine red alga Sporolithon episoredion (Adey, Townsend et Boykins) comb. nov. (Sporolithoideae, Corallinales) from the Spermonde Archipelago, southwestern Sulawesi, Indonesia, has been carried out. Gametangia and carposporangia are described in detail for the first time. Spermatangia are of the dendroid type, and occur on the floor and roof of the conceptacle. Short gonimoblast filaments arise from the dorsal side of the fusion cell. These new data have been used for a more complete characterization of Sporolithon episoredion.
