Abstract

Gadella Lowe, widespread in warm temperate and tropical seas is represented by eight nominal species, of which one is new. The genus is distinguished from other morid genera with light organs by the absence of a barbel. Thirty-one species of Physiculus Kaup are recognised, including six which are newly described. Physiculus is found in tropical and temperate waters of all oceans and is distinguished from other morid genera with light organs by the presence of a barbel and absence of vomerine teeth. Salilota Gunther is represented by a single species found only in cool temperate waters of South America and is distinguished from other morid genera with light organs by the presence of a barbel and vomerine teeth.
