Abstract

A derivative of the Fukashima Neocognitron was trained with a set of preprocessed target image chips for the purpose of target classification. The Neocognitron was chosen because of robust performance on handwritten characters that contain contours and complex line shapes not unlike the processed target images used in our multi-sensor/multi-look information fusion system. Advantages of the Neocognitron include translation and distortion invariance, which are desirable properties of any classifier. This paper represents our initial results and conclusions from experiments and data analysis using the Neocognitron on FLIR target sets of ground vehicles.© (1997) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering.
