Abstract

A double stage nuclear demagnetization cryostat has been constructed to study the nuclear magnetic ordering of hcp solid 3 He. The first nuclear stage of this cryostat was machined from a copper block (99.999 purity, RRR 2700), and the amount of copper is effectively 64.6 moles in a 8T field. We used indium (RRR 11300) for the heat switch above this stage. Solid 3 He for the second nuclear stage is precooled in a magnetic field up to 7.2T. The second stage is equipped with ac susceptibility, NMR and pressure cells to measure nuclear magnetic ordering of hcp solid 3 He.
