Abstract

With the aim to describe migration flow of elder subjects (60 and over) who move from south to northern border of Mexico with the intention to cross to USA during the last 10 year period (2004–2013) participants of the Border Survey of Mexican Migration [Encuesta sobre Migracion en la Frontera Norte de Mexico (EMIF)] were described in two periods: 2004–2008 and 2009–2013. A total number of 2193 of elders age 60 and more were analyzed. They constitute a small proportion of the total migration flow to the US. However, this group showed an opposite behavior of that observed in the general migrant population, increasing its flow since 2008. Comparing the 2 year periods shows there has been a change in the demographic and migration profile of the elders. Results are discussed considering the effects of the economic crisis and the security enforcement laws for migrants after 2008.
