Abstract: The concept of ``equivalence,'' as it relates to comparing man and automaton, is explored and the notions of response equivalence and process equivalecne are contrasted. Some areas of psychological research are reviewed from the perspective of whether or not they concentrate on response or process identification. Finally, some questions concerning the description of biological automata are raised.
