Finding a Voice: Women in the Church

‘People ask me how I can be a feminist and a Roman Catholic. While I recognise it would appear to be a contradiction, it is not a contradiction for me.’ Sr Maria has been a nun for twenty-five years and is in no doubt about where she stands: I see myself as a woman of the twentieth century, also as a woman who happens to be a Christian. I like to think I am in tune with life around me. As sisters I think we have a great desire to be accepted as women who are struggling to find our own identity within the Church, just as other women are struggling to find their own identity in society. The Church is certainly one of the last bastions of sexism in the world, but things are beginning to happen that are good.
