Abstract

In order to gain a better understanding of the mechanism of ultrasonic machining, the ultrasonic machining rate has been measured on a number of solids having different physical properties. It has been found that a correlation exists between the measured machining rate and certain physical properties of the solid being machined. Two cases have been treated; namely, where the tool tip and workpiece are made of the same material, and where they are made of different materials. Empirical equations for the machining rate as a function of these physical properties have been obtained for both cases.
