Abstract
- Objective: This review aims to examine what is known about naloxone use within the school setting in the event of an opioid overdose and the outcomes of its use. Introduction: Opioid use is increasing among school-aged adolescents. School systems worldwide have the opportunity to prevent fatal opioid overdoses among students while attending school. Post-opioid overdose interventions have emerged throughout the United States. The use of naloxone can resuscitate a student in the event of an opioid-related overdose. Inclusion criteria: This review consists of school-aged patients that attend school with naloxone available for use in any geographical location. Methods: Using the PRISMA Checklist for Scoping Reviews, databases searched include PubMed, CINHAL, Embase, and Web of Science for peer-reviewed and gray literature descriptions for naloxone intervention programs within the school setting. A search strategy was developed with a reference librarian. A data extraction tool was created for extracting specific details about school-aged children in the school setting with the use or availability of naloxone.
