Abstract

Traumatic brain injury represents a major health problem in all countries of the world. Trauma is the leading cause of death for individuals younger than 40 years, with more than half of these deaths related to severe head injury. Two-thirds of head trauma victims are men; preexisting brain lesions are very seldom. Alcohol intoxication, however, is implicated in a large number of head injuries. The primary goal in treating craniofacial trauma is to preserve the patient’s life and neurological functions. Neuroimaging plays a vital role in early and correct diagnosis. The secondary goal is to identify those lesions that may determine the outcome of patients following head injury.
