Abstract

The thermomechanical state of a notched viscoelastic rectangular plate under cyclic planar bending is analyzed within the framework of a coupled thermoviscoelastic problem. It is shown that under sufficiently intensive loading a zone of melted polymer forms near the notch and moves deep into the body, which may cause thermal fatigue failure of the polymer.
