Examination of the Patellofemoral Joint

Physical examination is an important tool in diagnosing patellofemoral problems. Due to the variety of different pathologies which can be exhibited in the joint, a systematic approach is recommended. The authors recommend a stepwise examination, with the patient examined standing, sitting and supine; in each, both a static and dynamic examination is performed. Systematic examination and accurate documentation of findings aid the choice of further investigations and management strategies.
