Translation and Conflict

Dans son recueil From Elsewhere (2014), Ciaran Carson juxtapose une traduction de Jean Follain et, en regard, une deuxième traduction de cette première version. Des oppositions tensionnelles en résultent : traduction fidèle et libre ; traduction et auto-traduction ; les perspectives de celui qui enregistre et celui qui témoigne. Ce processus ouvert de la traduction facilite l’écriture de mémoires où les évènements violents en Irlande du Nord peuvent être confrontés.
In Ciaran Carson’s translation experiment From Elsewhere (2014), translations of Jean Follain are set beside second free translations of the first version throughout. The ensuing contrasts are held in tension: between close and free translation; translation and self-translation; the two historical perspectives of recorder and witness. In this open-ended translation process, extended personal memoir writing can confront the violent events of the Troubles in Northern Ireland many years later.
