Abstract

This chapter incorporates the radio channel into the resource allocation formulations presented in the previous chapters in order to make the aforesaid approaches of resource assignment more pragmatic. It leverages the Shannon bound to model the channel with consideration of Modulation and Coding Scheme (MCS) as it appears in the Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. The chapter uses a simple regression of the parameters to model the channel according to the MCS whose level depends on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This chapter moves the resource allocation presented in the previous chapters from the realm of wired networks to that of the wireless cellular communications systems in which the channel conditions directly speak to the amount of resources to be assigned to any particular node. The chapter portrays the impact of channel on the assigned resources such that two applications with identical QoS requirements may in practice need significantly different resources.
