Abstract
- In this paper, by analyzing the characteristics of video motion compensation errors (VMCE) we find that the existence of pulsive components depresses the compression performance of block DCT (BDCT) coding. To overcome this defect, a robust contour-BDCT coding algorithm for VMCE is proposed. It separates pulsive components from VMVE, coding the contour-like pulsive components separately, which makes the processed VMCE suitable for BDCT coding and fully makes use of the characteristics of BDCT coding. Because noise-like pulsive components are discarded and are not coded in our proposed coding algorithm, which only decreases the subjective quality slightly, a large number of bits are saved and can be used to code contour-like pulsive components and the processed VMCE more precisely. At the same time, genuine noise is discarded and is not coded into bit stream too, which makes the proposed coding algorithm very robust for noise. Experimental results show that the proposed coding algorithm can achieve better compression efficiency for VMCE when compared with the traditional BDCT-based coding algorithm.
