Abstract

"I want to have my own particular forms and words," declared a 27-year-old theatre artist in 1966. He was Suzuki Tadashi, and he has since become one of the world's most innovative directors. Entering Waseda University in Tokyo in 1958, Suzuki began his theatrical career at a student drama club, the Waseda Free Stage (WasedaJiyiu Butai). His early work at that time followed the realistic style of mainstream shingeki, Japan's orthodox modern theatre, patterned after the European theatre of Ibsen and Stanislavski.
