Abstract

Complications of biomaterials and medical devices are largely a consequence of biomaterial–tissue interactions, which all implants have with the environment into which they are placed. Most implants serve their recipients well for extended periods by alleviating the conditions for which they were implanted. Several key concepts of biomaterials–tissue interactions are emphasized in this chapter.
