Abstract
- in 1969 to 3.4 m3 in 1996. Most of the wood is currently applied to roof and window frames. It appears that there is a decrease in the total wood use for new OFD's and that the amount of wood products per average OFD also shows a declining tendency, counterbalanced however by a growing gross floor area and an increasing number of unsubsidized OFD's. For 1996, a balance of the total amount of wood applied in all OFD's with the input and output of wood products is presented. The total wood stock in all OFD's is estimated to amount 21 × 106 tonnes for 1996. This can be seen as a reservoir out of which wood becomes available every year through renovation and demolition of OFD's. This secondary wood (together with wood waste from newly built OFD's) can be cascaded, so that the resource wood is optimally used. The article concludes with options to increase the amount of wood used in new OFD's, by – amongst others – increasing the market shares of timber frame dwellings, wooden flooring and wooden foundation piles.
