Abstract
- The authors present a new model for alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) expansion, which is the leading cause of dam concrete deterioration and currently has no economically feasible method to stop the reaction. The paper first presents a literature survey of AAR, next presents the proposed model, and finally addresses the issue of potential applications. By utilizing chemistry, physics, and the mechanics of concrete, the premises of the model are the assumption of the volumetric expansion of the gel and the redistribution on the basis of weights related to the stress tensor. A dam analysis data preparation for an application of a two-dimensional analysis of an arch gravity dam is presented.
