Almost all mental and behavioral disorders can be diagnosed in patients with mental retardation, including the frequency of depression, which, according to various sources, ranges from 2.2% to 15.8%. There is the tendency to regard all psychopathological symptoms in such patients as manifestations of mental retardation. The diagnostic process is also complicated by the frequency of the atypical picture of depression. Affective disorders in such patients may not be diagnosed, which has a direct impact on the quality of medical care provided to them. To assess the symptoms of depression in patients with mental retardation, both the tools used in the general population and specially designed tools can be used. The article lists the most popular methods of assessment of depression in persons with mental retardation. When choosing a method of assessment, it is important to take into account the degree of mental retardation, the patients��� ability to verbalize their experiences. Timely diagnostics of depression will significantly improve the quality of medical care for patients with mental retardation.
