Abstract

A semi-structured telephone survey was used to gather data on skin care practices from twenty-six radiotherapy departments across Canada. Questions were asked about the department's recommendations on washing the irradiated area (with or without soap), using deodorant (if the axilla is in or near the treatment fields), use of creams or other products on the skin and the management of dry and moist desquamation. The results demonstrated considerable practice differences across Canada. The survey results were discussed in regards to recent evidence from the literature. A non-restrictive washing policy is encouraged, along with the use of mild hydrophilic cream to moisturise irradiated skin. The use of deodorant is also advocated if the skin is intact. Approaches for the active management of skin reactions are also discussed.
