Abstract

This chapter presents the various techniques used to model the additive manufacturing of metal components. The concepts of length and time scales of different physical phenomena are discussed, followed by a classification of the different modelling techniques along these lines. The potential applications of these different models towards reducing defects and increasing the precision of metal additive manufacturing are put forward. The chapter rounds off with the introduction of the concepts of uncertainty in models and the need for proper verification and calibration procedures. The particular challenges faced when trying to simulate the metal additive manufacturing process are highlighted, together with the corresponding solution approaches propounded by various researchers.
