Effect Of A ' Headway' Display On Driver Following Behavior, Experimental Field Test Design And Initial Results

This paper reports on a study of the effect of headway displays on driver following behavior. A visual color display, mounted in the instrument panel, was designed to indicate to drivers whether the headway they maintained was appropriate for the vehicle speed. Various human factors issues concerning the design and development of a headway display, are experimentally addressed.
