Impactos Acadêmicos, Científicos e Sociais da Fundação da Liga Acadêmica de Neurocirurgia da Universidade Federal do Triângulo Mineiro

Introduction: Neurosurgery is a medical specialty focused on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of pathologies of the nervous system. The structure of an academic neurosurgery league enables the technical-scientific improvement and a major academic contact with this area. In addition, the league provides efficient means for the exercise of multidisciplinarity by integrating members of different courses. Objectives: The objectives were divided into a tripod consisting of teaching, research and extension. Within the thematic of teaching the aim was to provide enrichment of the academic formation and approach of subjects of importance that are of little highlighting within the graduation. In the area of research, clinical cases and the elaboration of scientific material were discussed, as well as the insertion of the members in congresses, symposia and journeys in the area of Neurosurgery. Within the context of the extension, we sought to integrate and raise awareness among academics regarding the valorization of the work developed with the community, to positively impact the public health and to hold events for the dissemination of Neurosurgery to the community. Methods: There were weekly theoretical classes, covering basic topics and neurosurgical pathologies. The students were included in the follow-up of emergency room and outpatient care, in addition to elective neurosurgical procedures. Periodically the members of the league held meetings with discussions about clinical cases and elaboration of scientific material. The members of the league worked closely with the community raising awareness and prevention, and holding events and lectures in public teaching institutions in the region. Results: A regional symposium was held within the neurosurgical theme, with a target audience composed of members, internal and external to the university, reaching approximately 350 people. Related to the extension, a project was carried out with the community about prevention and clarification on neurological trauma, totalizing a final public of 500 students aged between 8 and 14 years. In addition, the members of the league attended to congresses in the area of Neurosurgery and produced scientific material. Conclusion: The foundation of the league showed a positive impact on the academic development of its members and had a beneficial impact on community preventive education, as well as being useful for the propagation of neurosurgical knowledge.
