Abstract

The effect of an anisotropic inertia coefficient in the Darcy equations is studied. How such anisotropy affects the critical Rayleigh number for the onset of convective motion in a porous layer with thermal and solutal effects is analyzed quantitatively. The mathematical analyses employed involve both linear instability techniques and the energy method for nonlinear stability.
