Abstract

The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia Quality Assurance Programs (RCPA QAP) Breast Module supplies cases of all types of breast pathology to participants. In 2008 there were 280 participants, the majority from Australia ( Each year, 30 cases of breast pathology, both benign and malignant, are selected from routine diagnostic practice. Cases are initially selected by the convenor, which are supplied to a panel of expert breast pathologists for assessment. Final selection then takes place by the convenor. In 2009 the format moved entirely to virtual images. Virtual imaging is essential if breast cores and small lesions are to be included in the program. In 2008 there were 7047 responses out of a possible 8200 (86%), similar to the response rate of 2007 (88%). On average, for the 30 cases, 83% of responses were concordant and 5% assessed as minor discordant. Discordant responses accounted for approximately 10%.
