Abstract

Healthcare is delivered in complex systems that contain numerous teams, each composed of individuals with unique funds of knowledge, technical skills, and behaviors. Simulation is used to develop and refine the capabilities of individuals in order to optimize their ability to fulfill their roles and responsibilities, allowing them to enhance team capabilities and, in turn, system performance. Using a Functional Analysis Systems Technique (FAST) diagram as the foundation of this chapter, we identify simulation as a “how” and improving patient outcomes as the “why” for an effective healthcare system, aiding the reader in understanding how simulation can be an effective tool for developing and enhancing the skills of individual practitioners.
