Abstract
- One reason the Lagrangian density for the gravitational field must contain both the co- and contra-variant field variables is because the part for the «free» gravitational field √−g R contains both of these variables. The same situation does not occur in general for the matter fields because Λ contains besides the matter-field variables the gravitational-field variables.
