Abstract

While many people continue to practice COVID-19-related safety measures, disparities in these health practices are radically split along political fault lines, with Republicans being far less likely to engage in behaviors such as wearing masks or face coverings than Democrats. Here we developed an “intervention tournament” which aims to identify the framings that are able to promote mask wearing among a representative sample of Republicans and Democrats in the U.S. In addition to our original eight conditions, which employ different moral values and factors specific to COVID-19 to identify which framings are able to promote more positive mask wearing attitudes, intentions, and behaviors (N = 5,000), we have added another control condition that does not include any framing manipulation at all (N = 650). While the addition of this new control condition is exploratory, we believe comparing the effects of our framings to this condition will be an important complement to the main analyses in our registered report. The tournament will provide insights on optimal strategies that encourage both Republicans and Democrats to engage in healthier behaviors during COVID-19, informing both theory and public health policies.
