Abstract

In this paper infinite elements are coupled to conventional elements in order to model the far field response and attention is focused on problems in which soil consolidation takes place. The used element preserves the compability between the variations of effective stress and pore pressure. This compatibility is a basic requirement for the accurate numerical modelling of saturated media. The applicability of this infinite element has been shown with the help of an example. The accuracy of the element has been evaluated by comparing the numerical results with the corresponding analytical solution.
