Abstract

Always discuss the possibility of pregnancy with women of childbearing age. Try to avoid drugs which are contraindicated in pregnancy in women of reproductive age group. Treatment should be discussed with each woman individually in relation to risk-benefit ratio. Try to avoid all drugs in first trimester. Use an established drug at lowest effective dose. Avoid polypharmacy. Ensure adequate fetal monitoring during pregnancy. Be aware of potential problems with individual drugs around the time of delivery. Inform treating obstetrician of psychotropic use. Monitor the neonate for withdrawal effects after birth.
