Abstract

Neutron and X-ray diffraction measurements were carried out for molten V 2 O 5 to determine the detailed atomic structure. The observed pair distribution function by neutron diffraction expresses the oxygen pairs, and there exist oxygen atoms located at a distance of 2.76 A around a central oxygen atom. The atomic coordinations of V-V and V-O have also been evaluated from both structure factors. An atomic configuration of this molten salt is supported by the tetrahedrally coordinated one, and some of these are connected by the three corners of four. The ultrasonic velocity and sound absorption measurements were also carried out to investigate the dynamical properties. The sound absorption for this molten salt decreases with increasing temperature, while the ultrasonic velocity is about 950 m/s above melting temperature and almost constant with increasing temperature. The structure and dynamical properties of such clustered liquid are discussed in relation to the network structure.
