Primary Closure: Simple, Intermediate, and Complex Closure of Wounds

Primary closure of a wound is the simplest reconstructive option in the soft tissue reconstructive ladder. When used, adequate soft tissue must be available to avoid excessive wound tension. A wound closed under excessive tension will lead to wound dehiscence or an unacceptably wide scar.
