Abstract
- The deformation of a granular assembly is studied using mean-field theory. It is demonstrated that this theory is inadequate in explaining even the most common features of the stress-strain behaviour. The length scale introduced by the two-particle statistics on which the theory is based is questioned and a new length scale is put forward that is relevant to structures observed in a new analysis methodology.
