Abstract

Polysaccharides containing active sites allow the incorporation of chemical moieties that may improve the adsorption properties of contaminants. The current article describes the bioactivity and adsorption properties of new sustainable ionic fibers prepared from polysaccharides. The TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and N-guanidinuim chitosan acetate (GC) were prepared from neat cellulose and chitosan, respectively. The prepared ionic fibers, CNF/GC, enhanced the deposition of calcium phosphate (CaP) nanoparticles. The analysis showed that the ionic fibers initiate the growth of calcium phosphate to form a hybrid with high inorganic ratio, 42.6 %. The mineralized calcium phosphate showed sponge-like morphology consisting of spherical to flake-like particles. The potential of the prepared materials for removal methylene blue (MB) was calculated. The prepared CNF/GC/CaP exhibited high removal efficiency for MB (531.9 mg/g) compared to CNF/GC which is 384.6 mg/g. Langmuir and pseudo second-order models are the appropriate models for the equilibrium isotherm and kinetic studies. The CNF/GC/CaP hybrid, thus, provides a sustainable adsorbent for dye removal applications.
