Canonical transformations and variational principles for fluid dynamics

Abstract

A complete and systematic derivation of Eulerian variational principles in fluid dynamics is given; the original Lagrangian, describing the fluid as a continuous system of particles, is systematically transformed by canonical transformations. Some of the variational principles known in the literature are recovered, and a new formulation is found. The formulations are discussed with respect to their applications in fluid dynamics.
