Abstract

Objectives This trial assessed the efficacy and vascular responses of combination therapy of statin with angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor in hypertensive hypercholesterolemic patients. Methods This was a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of atorvastatin alone, captopril alone and atorvastatin combined with captopril in 95 hypertensive hypercholesterolemic patients for 2 months with 2 months washout. Results Captopril alone did not significantly change C-reactive protein levels and lipoproteins, however, atorvastatin and atorvastatin combined with captopril significantly changed those, and atorvastatin combined with captopril showed significantly more improvement than captopril alone (P vs 6.2 ± 0.3 vs 10.2 ± 0.5, P vs 1.6 ± 0.2 vs 0.8 ± 0.01, P vs 167 ± 8 vs 127 ± 3, P vs 70 ± 5 vs 43 ± 6, P Conclusions Atorvastatin combined with captopril significantly improves endothelial function and reduces inflammatory markers in hypertensive hypercholesterolemic patients.
