Abstract

India is the second most populated country in the world with great heterogeneity and a complex religious structure. Hinduists are the most numerous (79,8%), followed by Muslims (14,2%) and Christians (2,3%), Sikhs (1,7%), Buddhists (0,7%). Jains (0,4%) and other religions. India was under the British colonial power for several centuries, which had a great impact on the Indian society. India nowadays in undergoing transition into a modern society influenced by globalization. Religious conflicts are still a great problem; religious minorities are not satisfied with their positions in the society. Hindu nationalists want to turn India into exclusively hinduist country and have a significant number of followers. The current party in power India at this time is Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It cooperates with Hindu nationalists and to a great extent approves of their extremist excesses. The Caste system has had a weaker influence on the everyday life in India recently, but certain social norms related to castes are still noticeable especially towards the India's „Untouchables“.
