The Role of Sustainable Bioenergy in a Fully Decarbonised Society

HIGHLIGHTS• Methodologies and tools for a strategic analysis of bioenergy and CCUS• Case study of biomass in a fully decarbonised in Danish Society year 2045• Design criteria for sustainable biomass in a fully decarbonised society• Guiding principles for countries being part of a global biomass sustainability• Robust multi technology strategy for sustainable biomass levels With the Danish government’s goals of decreasing 70% of CO2 emissions by 2030 and reaching a fullydecarbonised society in the years after, this paper aims at identifying the role of sustainable bioenergy inachieving this goal. The approach presented is relevant for other countries that are heading in the samedirection. The focus is on strategies to further develop the sustainable biomass resources and conversiontechnologies within energy and transportation paired with CCUS (carbon capture utilization and storage) tocoordinate with other sectors and achieve a fully decarbonised society. By using hour by hour energy systemmodelling and Smart Energy Systems approach, it is possible to create a robust multiple technology strategyand keep the sustainable bioenergy levels. The results are presented as principles and guidelines on how toinclude the use of sustainable biomass in the individual country as an integrated part of globaldecarbonisation.
