Abstract

Physical properties and structure were investigated for xCdO-(50-x/2)V2O5-(50-x/2)P2O5 (0=x=50) glasses. Substitution of CdO for V2O5 and P2O5 in the binary 50V2O5-50P2O5 glass increases the density and decreases the molar volume. The glass transition temperature first decreases linearly until x=40 mol% and then increases slightly. For 0=x=40 mol% the IR and Raman results show that Cd2+ attack V=O and P-O-P bonds, suggesting that CdO acts as a network modifier, in accordance with the decrease of Tg. For x>40, Cd2+ ions strengthens the glass, therefore, Tg increased, indicating that CdO acts as a network former.
