Abstract

The purpose with this study was to research how guitar teachers in the gymnasium can work to motivate their students. To find out how I conducted a series of qualitative interviews where I interviewed six guitar teachers who together worked in three different gymnasiums, two in Norrland and one in Västerbotten. The result showed that the interviewed teachers own view of motivation was that it was founded in their own will, drive and feeling. When it comes to working for motivation the teachers had some different opinions, several meant that it is important that the student gets an understanding for what they are doing in the lesson and why. Others claimed that the student’s motivation was directly linked to what genre the student got to play. Factors that this study showed as important for motivation to exist is that the teacher shares his musical experiences, that the student feels good and comfortable in the lessons, that the student feels that he is participating in the lessons, that the students drive is supported and encouraged and that the teaching material feels relevant and can be made interesting.
