The ace «As» a venom: the role of arsenic in «The name of the rose»

Cinema is one of the most influential media of communication accessible to population, thus constituting a valuable resource for the dissemination of any kind of message. However, sometimes it can also lead to misinterpretations and a loss of veracity contemptible at all. In this paper, the plot of The Name of the Rose is analyzed from a scientific perspective, taking into account all the toxicological aspects of the poisonings that occur and framing them in their historical context, in order to clarify if the authors have remained true to reality or have opted for a more attractive fiction.
El cine es uno de los medios de comunicación más influyentes y accesibles a la población, constituyendo así un valioso recurso para la difusión de todo tipo de mensajes. Sin embargo, en ocasiones también puede conllevar malinterpretaciones y una pérdida de veracidad en absoluto menospreciable. En el presente trabajo, se analiza el argumento de El nombre de la rosa desde una perspectiva científica, teniendo en cuenta todos los aspectos toxicológicos de los envenenamientos que se acontecen y encuadrándolos en su contexto histórico, con el fin de esclarecer hasta qué punto sus autores se han mantenido fieles a la realidad o se han decantado por una ficción más atractiva.
