Abstract
- International audience; Online training and practice initiatives for learning programming have been embraced by Engineering and Computer Science communities. Codding training platforms are very effective at providing hands-on, self-paced inde-pendent learning, using a range of browser technologies, emulation tools, structured learning and assessment. Online learning with connectivity to remote integrated circuit hardware, with probing of internal signals in real time can contribute to a similar rich, learn-by-doing experience. This paper presents the RISC-V Online Tutor course which provides structured, self-paced, interactive RISC-V architecture and applications training and prac-tice, using the reported vicilogic platform. The paper presents the course structure, the interactive independent-learning pedagogy, and the resource in the vicilogic learning, prototyping and course builder platform. The course provides a relevant and topical application of digital design (RISC-V processor), and bridge s the gap between low-level processor hardware de-sign and high level C programming. The paper presents information on user practice, user opinion and analytics. Feedback indicates a high level of user satisfaction and effective independent learning and achievement, validating the technology enhanced learning strategy, and acknowledging the visually-rich interactive experience provided by the platform. RISC-V Online Tutor course availability is timely, with the growing interest in the RISC-V open-source Instruction Set Architecture, the low number of available books on RISC-V, and encouragement by the RISC-V Foundation of the development of training materials by universities and industry training providers.
